Have you ever gone through a period in your on air life where you just don’t seem to ‘have it’ anymore? You don’t know what to say, you feel as though your links are unfocussed and you have generally lost the ability to do what you used to do naturally. I think we all go through this at some stage in our career.
The funny thing is, when you are going through a slump like this, you actually tend to try harder to perform.
Once you start to doubt your abilities and question what it actually is that you do, the gentle flow of your performance becomes stilted.
The next time this starts happening to you (or possibly it’s happening now) have a think about why you are not performing at your peak.
* Do you just need to get away for a while and repair yourself?
* Or do you need to overhaul yourself completely?
* You may need to take a break; you may need to change jobs.
* What though, if you like your job and enjoy the station you are in?
* What if you aren’t looking for a move and are just stuck in a rut? T
he first thing I would say to you is; don’t sweat it!
Don’t analyse it too much.
If you find that you are unable to do more than the very basic jock links, then that’s what you do. Ride the format; it will always back you up.
The format is there for a reason. It’s there to support your links. When you are performing at your best, you add to the format. When you are not at your peak, it will forgive you. Let the format do its thing.
You will always do the basics well and the funny thing is, your PD will love it!
You will come out of your slump eventually. Everyone does. It may not feel like it at the time and some slumps can go on for months, but you will come out of it.
The main thing here is not to beat yourself up.
Anyone who has ever been on air (and is honest about it) will admit to experiencing phases in their career where they got lost. Everything that used to be easy suddenly became difficult.
And don’t be afraid to ask for help from people you trust.
Wouldn’t you help, if you were asked?
