Do you use your real name on air?
A lot of people don't.
I never have...and there's a very good reason for that.
The 'me' off air is a different 'me' to the one ON air.
Not radically different...but different, none the less. 'Nails' can do more and be cheekier, louder, quirkier than the 'other guy'. Changing the name allowed me to become that person.
But we're supposed to be the 'real us' on radio...it's not supposed to be an act. Right??
NewsFlash! You change the version of you depending on who's company you are in.
Example: Do you speak to a four year old in the same way you speak to a police officer? In other words, we change our personality based on the situation and audience. When you are on the radio, you do likewise. The 'you' at home is a different version of the 'you' on the radio.
It's a compartmentalised version of an aspect of you (try saying that three times, quickly!)
Writers, actors, singers all change their names so that they are free to create. Radio is a creative process, so a name change is understandable.
Changing your name is not being fake...in fact it's allowing a very true and real version of yourself out to play. In some ways, it's being totally honest.
