We tend not to take awards ceremonies too seriously but 'get' their purpose. If nothing else, they're a chance for radio people to feel good about themselves for an evening. Nothing wrong with that.
The ARIAS are curious in that they are set up as the national awards for the UK. The fact that Global doesn't take part at all, dilutes it. Imagine how Roman Kemp, Chris Moyles, Jamie and Amanda and Alexander Armstrong would perform if they were able to take part. Or how LBC, Smooth, Capital and Heart would look on the list of nominees.
This year's winners include BBC Local and national radio - Scott Mills picking up Best Music Entertainment Show is a good call, along with Greg James for Breakfast.
Jack FM in Oxford continues to show its muscle with three awards, including a Bronze in the Best Local Radio Show category for their Breakfast Show (which has since re-branded).
Also, Times Radio picking up a Bronze will have been good news for that newcomer.
Interesting to see podcasts among the winners. Is that a way of saying all audio is the same now and we don't differentiate between radio and podcasts? We've been banging that drum for quite a while now. Yes, I know they are the 'Audio & Radio Awards'. It just seems to be morphing into one, more and more, each year.
Well done to the winners. Enjoy the accolades. They're well earned.
Just can't help think that the list is weakened by the missing Global stations.
