8 Ways to Be Better On Air (No BS!)

1. Show up on time...Back in the studio? Don’t make the presenter before you over-wait your arrival for

your shift.  They have just finished theirs and are done...ready to go.

You will be too in a few hours. In the same regard, when you’re finished your shift - leave the studio.

Don’t hang around chatting with the next jock...they need to settle in. If you’re lonely, get a dog.

2. Don’t be an asshole...Hear some negative news about someone in the radio station? Keep it to yourself. Guy on before you screwed up a bit on air? Don’t bring it up unless they do.

3. Figure out Who you are...“Go in there and be yourself…” we’re told. That’s the toughest part about being an on air presenter. Ever hear of ‘Therapy’? That’s where people go in order to TRY and figure out who they are! Being ‘yourself’ on air is a MASSIVE ask and one we can only work on day by day.

4. Avoid Toxic People...I often wonder why they’re in the business? All they seem to do is complain about lack of shifts, lack of money, lack of opportunities. They can’t stand the PD, the music or the morning show. Walk away from this person. However, if you don’t know a person in your building who does this, then chances are it’s YOU.

5. Over Deliver...Before you open that mic and deliver your link, ask yourself “How can this be better?” Most people deliver the first draft of a link and are happy with that - you need to be offering at least a third draft.

6. Give yourself a break...Show sucked today? That last link didn’t work? Made a mess of a caller edit? Forget it, move on and be better next time. Yes, your standards are high but we’re all allowed a little ‘screw up’ space. Anyway, don’t worry - the toxic person heard it and is telling everyone they know already!

7. Do You Care?...If you don’t care, why should your listener? Listeners know if you give a damn - they can hear it in your voice. You won’t fool them. You need to care. You WILL be found out.

8. Impress Yourself...Nothing wrong with thinking you’re great. Every now and then though, prove it to yourself. Do something you didn’t think you could do. If you’re that good, prove it. Then let others comment on it.
