It's January 2014. My first aircheck as a presenter at Q107 Toronto.
My last aircheck had been in Dublin two years previously and had been an awful experience.
This was different though. Blair, the PD, was beaming. His body language friendly, his tone warm and encouraging.
After a few minutes of listening, we were about to arrive at 'that' link. You know, the lazy link. The one I hadn't prepped and delivered sloppily. That one!
The link played out, I cringed and tried to defend myself by saying "Well...I wasn't going for the award with that one!" Followed by an awkward "Ha ha".
Blair, without missing a beat, replied softly "Sure, sure. Eh...we're always going for the award here".
Boom! The bar was set at 'high' and has never been re-set.
Imagine what you could do if you decide to 'go for the award' every time you speak on air!

It was said to me years ago that you should treat every link like a gift from god (whatever god yir inta). Always stuck with me. Sure, there will always be that “lazy” link but every time you put the finger tip into the curve of the fader... make it gold!!!
ReplyDelete100% agree. Nice thinking. Every time you speak, you have a new listener and a loyal one. They both deserve your best. It takes discipline though and a good PD to make you WANT to be your best.
