It's All a Game!

Listeners enjoy games.

Might as well stop right there!

But, I'll go on...

Check your TV listings over Christmas and New Year. Besides movies, soaps and talk shows, do you know the biggest format of them all? Game shows.

From 'The Wall' to 'Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?' to 'Pointless', 'Family Fortunes', 'Catchphrase', 'The Chase' and 'The Wheel'...game shows are HUGE!

For the most part, they are simple Q&A sessions, wrapped around a concept. The basic premise is the same for most. So why are they still so popular?

Well, they tap into a few things. They're the ultimate Hook and Tease in that they finish with a resolution. They allow us to take part by shouting answers at the screen and they also allow us to connect and 'root' for the contestants.

But in 2020, they served one other purpose. They are very light entertainment...a release.

Radio loves quizzes, contests and competitions. We always have. As an industry, we're bloody great at devising and executing contests. Now, more than ever, your listener is interacting with games on air.

Never under-estimate the power of a simple concept. We connect socially by asking and answering. It's what humans do! You can tap into that every day. Plus, it allows us to talk about ourselves ("Oh, I know the answer!"). People LOVE to talk about themselves and share their experiences.

Keep playing those games, asking those questions and entertaining, as part of your overall gig.
