We were asked, in the middle of last year, what we saw as the trends for radio listening.
Based on conversations we had with hundreds of PDs and consultants across the globe in 2021, we gave this answer:
“People will want information relayed in a conversational and brief tone. They will want to have that information delivered in a way that is relevant to them. If they listen to the radio for music…GIVE them music! This means music radio will need to be tight and clean and laser-targeted”.
The latest radio ratings in Ireland (out today Feb. 10th) back this up.
Radio 1 sits at 26% Listened Yesterday in Dublin.
NewsTalk with 15%.
CHR/Hot AC stations are killing other stations in their demographics.
Beat 102103: 23% Listened Yesterday in their market.
Spin SW: 21%.
iRadioNW: 17%.
RED FM Cork: 30%
Spin 1038 Dublin: 12%
Easy Listening Sunshine 106.8 holds steady at 7%, on par with the corporate Bauer and Wireless juggernauts.
Meantime, 2FM in Dublin hangs onto a 5% with Today FM at 7%.
What will the arrival of the new Ray Foley show do for Today FM (Feb. 14th) or The 2 Johnnies for 2FM (Feb. 21st) ?
We hope both are roaring successes…we wish that for every show.
We will know in 12 months, I guess.
We have been saying to programmers and talent all year:
Radio isn’t that hard but It’s been made to appear bloody difficult.
In this era of lower attention spans and instant access to information and music, radio is battling on all fronts…not just against ‘other’ radio.
It’s up to the on-air talent to be better than they have ever been and programmers to not just programme but to become ‘Talent Evolvers’.
