VOICE TOO SHOUTY!

(Tracey Lee)

Coaching this week and THIS seems to be a common trend. Here are a few things to bear in mind and some tips that can help:

* Shouting too much can affect your vocal cords and result in a sore throat. Prolonged shouting can lead to further damage.
* Growing up in a house where your peers were loud could have an impact on the way you project your voice.
* Psychological: Speaking loudly could be a sign that you feel you are not being heard and another sign is repeating yourself; making sure they really hear what you are saying.
* Projection doesn’t mean speaking loudly.
* You don’t need to shout into the microphone to be heard! Practice mic techniques.
* A good pair of headphones can help. Practice off air in a home studio or even using your phone. Put your headphones on, read something and try to quieten your voice. Really listen and when you hear your voice becoming too hyper or you raise it to a higher volume, focus on shaping it, bringing it right down and softening it.
* Raise your voice to emphasise certain words or phrases!
*Slowing your pace can relax you and often soften your tones!
* ALWAYS have a bottle of water next to you when you're speaking on radio or voicing a script.
Our ethos is “Say It Once And Say It Well”
Relaxation and breathing exercises really help. Breathing all the way down to your diaphragm and exhaling slowly. Try a few times a day. Relax your throat. Vocal exercises in general help with delivery.
We have a series of exercises we use when coaching. They really work.
