What Money Can't Buy.

I was listening to the great Zig Ziglar speak about what money can and cannot buy.

I like the way Zig was able to shine a light on truth so clearly.
His belief was that the things money can buy are nice things...a house, a car, good clothes and whatnot. Nothing wrong with any of that.

His point was that money can buy a house but not a home, it can buy you a nice bed but not a good night's sleep or a beautiful pair of shoes but not somewhere welcoming to walk them to.

When we compare what we have with what other people have, we allow the other person's shoes or house or car become the standard by which we live.

Their house is in a nicer part of town...why can't I live in the nice part of town?
He bought the new Nike shoes...they look more comfortable than my old Adidas ones.
How you get to compare beds...well, I'll leave that one up to you ;) !

The danger is in allowing these items to become substitutes for the real happiness and peace.
The house, car, shoes...whatever, won't bring happiness. They can't bring peace because the comparisons will keep the ill-at-ease flame burning.

Who doesn't want to enjoy the nice things money can buy? Pretty much everyone.
I want to fly business class and stay in a great hotel and eat an amazing steak dinner, drink nice wine and enjoy all of those things. I bet you do too.

But...the happiness and peace need to be in place first before you can enjoy them.

Comparing yourself to others won't allow this to happen for you.

  1. When I'm coaching people, I'm emphasise often that we only want these otuside things to give us an inside feeling. We all want to feel good, but as feelings come from inside, those feelings are available to you any time you choose them.

You cannot get an inside feeling from an outside source.
