What do you think?
If you work on an online-only station with no airchecking and no consistent monitoring, does that count as work? Or is it a hobby?
Put it this way - we don't know of any presenters hired directly from an online station. If you know of any, let us know.
Experience tells us that programmers look at internet-only stations as hobby stations and don't take them seriously in a professional way. There's nothing wrong with working with an online station...in fact they can be great fun. We know many people running two, three even four shows per week on various stations around the world.
BUT...will they be taken seriously by the dog-eat-dog industry?
Will that get you a paid job on a licensed outlet?

Wow, really, PDs think that about Internet only stations? I guess context matters, but I consider some Internet stations I've heard a damh sight better and more full of personality than so called professional stations. maybe professional stations aren't looking for personality though, maybe they just want to tick a box on a spreadsheet that satisfies the demographic. In my view that's why a lot of mainstream radio has become so soleless where the presenters are so restricted you could just replace them with an AI voice. Don't get me started lol
ReplyDeleteYeah, I hear you and agree on a lot of what you say. Both sides of the coin here - there are great and awful internet stations and great and awful licenced FM/DAB stations. No guarantees that just because you have a licence means you will be a great station.
DeleteI thought the purpose of radio was to have fun with something you like doing and interact with the listener, however a lot of radio stations seem to belive that their way is the best way, thats wrong you can have a good presenter who is hindered by station politics and can't expand , Stations will be listened to based on what the listener wants to here , then there's the automated stations with no jocks or doing the overnight with no one in studio. One of the things I like as a listener is listening to a jock on air no matter what time of the day or night , but here in Ireland all stations belive that having a jock on in the wee hours isn't feasible go figure, I believe that if you have someone on air in the wee hours at least you have someone else up at that time as well that you can text/talk to , it means alot to people who work night shift to know that they arent alone.
ReplyDeletePD'S need to be reminded that people/listeners need to be entertained wheather by a goofy jock or funny interactions and they also need to stop this "have you been in radio before"? Were looking for someone with content!FFS content is what is produced on air, another thing is why does the "radio group" in Ireland feel like a closed shop. People with experience can't get a job. I remember a PD saying you need experience in order to have experience, door, im in the Broadcasting game since 1983 - probably the year he was born, what do you say to pd's who just won't listen and you know in your heart and soul you could definitely make it work. This is whats wrong with radio as far as I can see unless your in the gang your not going forward, this is wrong .
Rant over ......now where the tynonal 😁😁😁
