Ellen DeGeneres announced this week that she is quitting her talk show after 19 years.
That's one heck of a run by any standards. There were rumours that the show had become a 'toxic' place to work on for the staff but that doesn't seem to be the reason she is ending it.
The main thing we take from this is the '19 years'. Did I mention that's a heck of a run??
Not many people in the entertainment industry have the power and popularity to stretch one show that far.
Simon Mayo is a great example of longevity and 'smarts'. From the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show in the 90s through to Radio 2 - he WAS 'Mister BBC'. Then he left! Since then, his career hasn't stalled...moving to Scala and now GHR in the UK
The point is - knowing when to leave is important.
Knowing when time is up is just as important as staying.
Putting the pieces in place so that, when your time is up you have somewhere to go, is vital.
NOW is the time to do that.
Unless you have a few million under the bed...
