Some Listeners Don't Like You? That's Good!

No matter who you are or what you do, there are people who won’t like you.

You could be the world’s greatest human being...and someone will take a dislike to your presence.

BUT...that can be a good thing!

If you’re on the radio, it actually frees you up to be ‘you’.

Programmers always say “Be yourself” on the radio. However, have you ever been told ‘how’ to do that? I'm guessing, not - and it’s possibly one of the toughest parts of your gig.

If you go on air trying to please everyone...you will fail. Because a percentage of people listening will not like you. No matter what. It’s a guarantee. That's not your problem though.

Trying to please everyone is an impossible task...and it compromises you.

Once you compromise who you are then you are no longer the ‘real’ you.

Catch 22. Trying to please people and staying “yourself” actually has the opposite effect. You become a version of yourself that is based on your perception of how another person may see you.

How do you use this to your advantage?

Stop trying to please everyone!

This frees you up to be the real you. It allows you to concentrate on what it is that people actually like about you.

Take the emphasis off trying to make everyone happy and figure out how to make YOU happy on air.

That way the people who like you will like you more because you’re being genuine and those that don’t like you...well, they need to deal with that.

Honesty is attractive...by being honest you serve you and your audience better.

Also, you never know - you might even sway the non-likers too!

After all, they’re listening.

To paraphrase Ricky Gervais - “If you’re pissing some people off, you must be doing something right”!
