Here's something I noticed yesterday. UK PM Boris Johnson spoke in Parliament about Covid and Lockdown. In his speech, he outlined dates for a phased re-opening for England. His plan is to have the country back to normal and fully operational by June 21st.
Reaction was incredible. People online celebrating...talking about what they will do on June 21st...how they will go clubbing on June 21st and how they can't wait to hug their friends on June 21st.
Do you see a theme here? He could have said June 23rd or 24th and it wouldn't have mattered. The fact that he was specific is what's important. With that very definite date in their heads, the public has something concrete to aim for. They will put up with whatever happens in the meantime because...well....June 21st!!!
Compare that to countries with no date to aim for and the public are angry and confused.
When you are direct and deliver concrete timelines or instructions, you take control and that is appreciated.
Let's take a small matter of a radio link. If you have a major announcement and tell your listener that it will be coming up "soon", you create uncertainty. When is 'soon'? Twenty minutes...five minutes?
When you are definite, though, it makes all the difference. "I'll tell you all about it in eleven minutes..."
The difference that can make.
It shows you are in control, you know what you are doing, you have a plan and that you respect your listener's time.
I wonder could Boris work CHR..."Boris in The Morning"....maybe not....
