The place is Dublin, Ireland. I'm a green, eager and hungry-to-learn radio wannabe, who has just grabbed his first big break. The station: Sunshine 101.
The new PD had arrived in town from Omaha Nebraska. 'Wild' Bill Cunningham (RIP)...the 'Radio Doctor'. Over the next couple of years, Bill would transform the Dublin market single-handedly (and gained a lot of enemies because of that). For me...he gave me the break I needed and I am forever grateful for that.
Bill was loud, brash, funny, ruthless and an original. Jock meetings turned into motivational sessions. Airchecks became celebrations. Bill demanded the best and when he got it from you, BOY did he tell you ALL about it!
What's this got to do with KIIS in Sydney? Well...KIIS sounds like it's in 'show business'.
At our first-ever staff meeting with Bill, he looked around the room and said quite seriously: "You folks are no longer in the radio business. From this day on...you are in SHOW business".
Once you understand that, then everything changes and you begin to entertain and when you begin to entertain, you gain audience and when you gain audience...you become number one in your market.
