Too Many Presenters?

We were approached by an out-of-work presenter about a job he had just been offered.

On an internet-only station. Five days per week. For free.

The sell was "It will keep you fresh and in the market place".

Will it?

Is it a good idea to take a non-paying gig on a station with a minimal audience...just to stay relevant? What do you think?

Does this sort of scenario dilute your value and take away from all that you have already accomplished in the past in your radio career?

Is the amount of people willing to work for free bringing down the overall standard?

Is it a step forwards or backwards...or is it a 'holding pattern'?

  1. My philosophy would go along the lines of...it's easier to find a position if you're already in a position rather than starting from a standing start. Doing something for free doesn't devalue you, only doing the job with less professionalism because you're doing it for free will devalue you.

  3. I did 5 days a week for free for nearly a year But it was at the very start of my radio career. It made sense to get airtime under my belt but I don't think it's a good idea to do it after you've established yourself. This person should use their free time to find paid work.
