I was on air at 4FM in Dublin...sitting in the studio, presenting the afternoon show, when the door flung open to reveal the towering figure of Tom McGurk, the Drive show host.
"Gerry Ryan's dead"!
He stood there for a few seconds to let that sink in and then left.
"Gerry Ryan...? No way..."
That was this day, eleven years ago.
So ended an era and so departed an on-air presence at the age of 53, that the Irish airwaves has never been able to fill. No matter how hard we have tried, no matter how many new talents show up, it's becoming quite evident as the years go by that there really was only one Gerry Ryan. He can never be replicated and in fact, it's pointless to try.
Imagine eleven years on and people still remark about how unique and great you were.
That "My friends" (as Gerry used to say) is the mark of a 'great'.
