It's a rule I was taught when I was starting out...and as with all 'rules' in radio, everyone has their own opinion of it.
"If you have nothing to say...say nothing".
My first proper gig was on a 100MPH CHR format in Dublin. We're talking 5-10 second links over intros. No dead air. So if you were faced with a fade outro into a cold start, you had a choice: Make the link count or say nothing at all.
In fact, I think the PD preferred if you said nothing...no harm can be done that way ;)!
These days, the 'rule' stays true in a lot of situations...from presenting to imaging. If you have nothing of interest or relevance to say, then why waste you listener's time with filler...just for the sake of it?
Yes, you are a presenter but with all great communicators, knowing when to stay quiet is just as important as the words you use.
