Coronation Street's 60th Pic.

Corrie celebrates 60 years on air this year.

This really cool pic was taken to show the first seven and most recent seven actors to join the cast. I reckon if you're in here, you're OK for a new contract! New members have to be thinking "Nice one, that's me sorted for a bit" :)

Whether you're a fan of the show or not, you have to admit it's proven itself. I can't think of another drama on TV that has become part of everyday life. Even if you only ever saw a couple of episodes, you'll recognise these names: Mike Baldwin, Hilda Ogden, Ken Barlow, Rita Sullivan, Steve McDonald, Gail Tilsley and a plethora of former and current names that could fill a book alone.

I stopped watching the show for about twenty years...until recently. Don't ask me why, but I'm back! Re-acquainting myself with the cast and storylines was easy.

So what has Corrie got that brings viewers back and why do we fit right back in? Plus what can a radio presenter learn from it all?

Let's look at the show's main staying points:

Strong characters. Great storylines (for the most part!). Believable delivery (for the most part!). Humour. Sadness. Conflict. Consistency. Surprises.

Now, think about what a presenter is asked to be. How many of those qualities match YOUR job spec.

I'd say all of them (even sadness). Then add more.

The point being - if a show like Coronation Street can go on and on and on, lose people (such as me) and then get them back again...it's got the right recipe. Oh sure, it mightn't always work perfectly but it's consistent and familiar while also able to surprise and entertain. Just like YOU!

Don't forget Hilda's ducks either...sitting on the wall...a benchmark if ever there was one :)
