So, over to the main search part and type in the name.
Oh dear...not Des O'Connor.
The nicest man in showbiz?
This has happened quite a bit recently...Bobby Ball, Leonard Rossiter, Geoffrey Palmer, Sean Connery...remind me not to open bloody Twitter. The thing's a curse!
I guess after reaching a point in your life, the heroes and celebrities you grew up watching will start to pass away. I remember as a kid hearing about old entertainers from the 40s, 50s and 60s and people reacting to them dying. It never impacted me. It never does with kids. Even Eric Morecambe, who I adored, didn't have much impact on me. I was too busy being a young lad to make a fuss out of it.
When Phil Lynott passed, the whole of Ireland went into mourning.
I'm afraid to say, I had no response. If it had been Gary Numan or a member of Kraftwerk...that would have been a different story. Kids eh? No bloody respect.
So, there goes Des O'Connor. Always the butt of jokes on the Morecambe and Wise show ("He's not going to sing, is he?"). A staple of light entertainment in the 70s and early 80s...he always seemed to enjoy himself.
As a singer, he could more than hold his own and (before my time) was quite the chart success story.
As an interviewer, he really appeared to love his guests...even Stan Boardman on the night Stan committed career suicide with the famous 'Fokker' story. Des hiding behind a cushion on his couch, curled up, eyes agog and laughing hysterically in both enjoyment and fear!!
He seemed like such a nice man and it's been great to see people he worked with and knew back that up.
Up there with Eric and Ern now...I hope they let him sing. Finally.
